LG Twins catching prospect Kim Bum-seok (19) could remain a catcher.

LG manager Yoon Kyung-yeop revealed his thoughts on Kim Bum-seok’s position in an interview before the game against the Kiwoom Heroes of the 2023 Shinhan Bank SOL KBO League at Jamsil Stadium in Seoul on April 1.

Kim Bum-seok, who was selected in the first round (No. 7) of the 2023 rookie draft, is a big-bat prospect with high hopes for LG. While he’s yet to make an impact in the big leagues, going 0-for-4 in two games, he’s batting 2-for-9 (177-for-53) with six home runs, 29 RBIs and an .831 OPS in 52 games in the Futures League. At the Futures All-Star Game, he went 2-for-4 with a double, home run, and four RBIs, earning MVP honors.

Kim Bum-seok has already gained some recognition for his batting. The problem is defense. His natural position is catcher, but he hasn’t been able to field as a result of his shoulder injury. There are doubts that he will be able to maintain the position in the long run.

Coach Yeom Kyung-yup said, “Kim Bum-seok is not a catcher yet. His shoulder injury makes it difficult for him to throw. It’s going to take a while,” and “I think I’ll have to make a decision after this season. I can’t just keep going like this,” he pointed out.

“I also need to think about switching positions,” said Yeom Kyung-yup, “I’m trying to decide by synthesizing the opinions of the scouting team, the development team, and the training part.
