Kiwoom Heroes won a rain-cold 8-1 victory in the top of the seventh inning against the KIA Tigers in the 2023 Shinhan Bank SOL KBO League at KIA Champions Field in Gwangju on the 27th. Kiwoom starter Chung Chan-heon gave up one run in the first inning but settled down to pitch a solid game. He pitched six innings of three-hit ball, striking out one and walking two to earn his second win of the season (4-2). It was a six-inning complete game. On the other hand, KIA starter Lee Yi-ri got himself into trouble with another walk. He gave up two hits (one home run), struck out five and walked six in 4.2 innings to fall to 5-6 on the season.
KIA struck first in the bottom of the first inning when Kim Do-young led off with a single to the left side of the infield and stole second. Choi Won-jun grounded out to second to put runners at first and third. Lee Woo-sung grounded out to second base to score the go-ahead run. Kiwoom responded in the top of the third with a single to left by Lim Ji-yeol and walks to Yoo Soo-sik and Kim Jun-wan, before Kim Hye-sung’s three-run blast to right tied the game.
Kiwoom broke the game open with five runs in the top of the fifth. Kim Joo-hyung singled and Kim Jun-wan followed with a sacrifice bunt before Lee Jung-hoo drew an automatic walk and Lee Won-seok singled to load the bases. Lee Hyung-jong followed with a double down the left field line off Park Joon-pyo. Song Sung-moon hit a two-run triple that hit the structure above the right field fence. Lim Ji-yeol followed with an RBI single up the middle.
However, the rain started to fall in the middle of the game, and it became much heavier in the top of the seventh inning when Kiwoom’s offence was underway. First baseman Lee Ji-young was retired on a line drive to second base, and Kim Joo-hyung was no longer able to bat.
The game was eventually suspended at 20:33. The rain thinned out for a while, but then picked up again. The rain was pouring so hard that it was impossible to see the field. The umpires decided to call the game after 30 minutes.
