‘A whopping 168km!’ Cuban fast bowler, 25, bowls fastest ball of 2023
Minnesota Twins’ Johan Duran, 25, has thrown the fastest ball of the year.
“Duran touched 104 miles per hour (167.4 kilometers per hour) on his speed gun for the first time this year,” MLB.com, the official site of Major League Baseball, reported on Saturday.
Duran pitched ⅔ of an inning in relief against the San Francisco Giants on May 25 at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota, striking out two and walking none. Minnesota won 7-1.
Entering the game in the top of the ninth inning, Duran struck out the first batter he faced, Blake Sabol. He then faced the second batter, Wilmer Flores, with two strikes and threw a 104.6 mph (168.3 km/h) fastball.
It was the fastest pitch of the game and the fastest pitch in the majors this year. However, Flores fouled it off and eventually threw a 90.3-mph (145.3-kilometer) curveball four pitches later for a double. With two on and two out, Duran struck out the final batter, Casey Schmidt, to end the game.
MLB.com wrote, “Duran, who throws a fiery fastball, topped 104 mph three times on the day. His fastball topped out at 104.6 mph and touched 104 mph on his final strikeout to end the game.”
Duran’s 104.6 mph was the fastest fastball thrown in the major leagues this season. The previous marks were 103.8 mph (167.0 km/h) thrown by Jordan Hicks (St. Louis) on March 31 and Aroldis Chapman on May 17.메이저사이트
MLB.com noted, “Duran is the eighth pitcher to throw 104 mph or more since the pitch tracking system was introduced in 2008. Duran, Chapman and Hicks are the only pitchers to have thrown 104 mph multiple times in a game. Only Duran, Chapman, Hicks and Mauricio Cabrera have thrown 104 mph and recorded a strikeout.”
