Los Angeles Angels rookie pitcher Ben Joyce, 22, is the talk of the town for his fastball velocity. In his major league debut, all of his fastballs have touched 100 mph or higher.

Joyce took the mound in the seventh inning of a 4-2 loss to the Astros at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas, on April 2.

He faced four batters over one inning, allowing one hit and two walks while striking out one. He threw 11 pitches, all of which were fastballs, and all of which touched 101.1 mph (162.7 km/h) or higher. His fastball touched 102.9 mph (165.6 km/h).

He got the first batter, Yoenis Diaz, to fly out to center field on a fastball (102.1 mph). Jose Altuve struck out on three pitches. The fastballs were clocked at 102.3, 101.9, and 101.3 mph.

Jeremy Peña hit a 101.1 mph fastball on three pitches into the infield. He struck out Jordan Alvarez on three pitches at 102.9, 101.1 and 101.9 mph.

Joyce made his major league debut on May 30 against the Chicago White Sox. He threw 12 pitches, all but one of which were fastballs. His fastball touched 102.2 mph (164.5 km/h), and all of them were over 100.2 mph (161.3 km/h). He threw one cutter, which touched 89.3 mph.

His second start in the big leagues came on Aug. 2 against Houston. In two games, he has pitched two scoreless innings with two hits and four strikeouts. In those two games, he threw 22 fastballs, none of which broke 100 mph.

Joyce had a personal best fastball of 105.5 mph in college. He suffered an elbow growth plate injury during his freshman year, and in October 2020, after transferring to the University of Tennessee, he tore the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow and underwent the Tommy John surgery.

After returning in 2022, he began throwing 100-plus mph fastballs. He threw a personal best 105.5 mph (169.8 km/h) four-seam fastball last March.

In last year’s Major League Baseball draft, Joyce was selected by the Angels in the third round (89th overall). He was considered a risk outside the top 100 draft prospects due to a history of injuries and a low number of innings pitched in college as a bullpen arm.메이저사이트

After signing with the Angels, Joyce went 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA in 13 games at Double-A last year. He struck out 20 in 13 innings. This year, he was called up to the big leagues in late May after going 1-0 with a 4.60 ERA in 14 games (15.2 innings) at Double-A with 24 strikeouts and 13 walks.
